About

This blog is the result of a couple of years of vicarious exploration of Mars via publicly available data, images etc. from NASA, Google Earth, JMARS and the web. As time went on I began to see patterns in geomorphological features that led to conjectures about the geological history of the planet and implications for future exploration. It’s basically about pattern recognition and, based on my 40-odd years as an exploration geophysicist, analogues from terrestrial examples.

The blog itself is a rather lengthy, rambling affair, set up to be taken in bites, not swallowed whole. I’ve divided it into sections, and provided lots of illustrations, in the hope that the reader will have a chance to discover things for himself. It’s still a work in progress, and I anticipate making additions and changes/corrections over time. I hope it will lead to some new ideas.
